Unbelief

I am the outcast of our current political system.

I want freedom for everyone and think religion and politics should never mix.

I am the mother and father who want their children to learn science in school and not myths from an ancient work of fiction.

I am the son or daughter of faith who learned that the universe is so much bigger than the whims of a petty and vengeful ancestral deity.

I am your teacher, your co-worker, your friend, your relative, your boss, your neighbor.

I am the person that is afraid to tell their spouse what I believe because they might leave me.

I am the silent and the outspoken.

I am the Christian who stopped believing a long time ago but still goes to church every Sunday to keep up appearances.

I am the pastor who has lost their faith and preaches empty words to the faithful because I don't know who will want to hire a non-believer with a degree in theology.

I am the politician who smiles and lies when I mention my faith in God so I can get re-elected.

I am the adult son or daughter who is afraid to tell their parents why I don't go to church anymore because they might never speak to me again.

I am the educator who worries about losing their job if I answer the wrong  questions from my students about evolution.

I am the teenager who's parents kicked them out of the house because I told them I didn't believe in their God.

I am the one who stands in awkward silence because I don't want to recite a pledge that mentions a god I don't believe in.

I am the child who feels alone because I have no one to talk to about my doubts.

I am the victim of domestic violence who stopped praying for the beatings to stop because I know no one is listening.

I am one of the most hated members of society even though I am statistically the least likely to violate the rights of others.

I am the skeptic who is told to stop hating people of faith for simply requesting proof of their unjustified claims and for challenging their beliefs with reason and logic.

I am the product of a world torn between reason and madness; between fear and enlightenment.

I am the voice of victims of thousands of years of religious oppression that can finally speak without fear of violent persecution.

I am every person that was stoned, murdered, burnt at the stake, or imprisoned because I refused to accept your faith.

I am an atheist.
